Automotive AC Machines

As any mechanic knows, the ability to offer a comprehensive service to customers, being able to offer repairs and care for all aspects of a motor vehicle maintenance program is key to being able to retain customers. Air Conditioning is more or less standard across all models these days, and while in the past, AC maintenance was a highly skilled and niche market, it is now an essential side of the business and key to any workshop's continued success.

In order to ensure that refrigerant is recovered properly from a car's air conditioning system during servicing, a workshop must use an automotive AC machine. These devices prevent the release through venting of CFC gases. EPA guidelines require that when a car is being serviced, the Freon, or CFC12 that is used as the coolant should be collected and recycled in order that it is not released into the environment where it can potentially damage the ozone layer.

The refrigerant used in most motor vehicle air conditioning systems is based on chlorofluorocarbons, which have been linked with causing damage to the ozone layer, and as such, the control of these substances is of particular concern to the environmental protection agency. Whenever a car air conditioning system undergoes maintenance, proper care must be taken to protect the environment from the release of CFCs, and this is best done by using automotive AC Machines.

By reusing Freon gas rather than allowing it to be vented into the atmosphere, the environment is protected. However, when the refrigerant is collected from a car's air conditioning it can be contaminated with water, oil and any of the other liquids that are used in cars. By using automotive AC machines, it is possible to process the refrigerant and remove any of the other fluids from it, allowing it to be reused, either in the same system as it has been drained from, or alternatively, in another car altogether.

There are a whole range of different refrigerant recovery machines on the market to suit all types of workshop, from small operations through to large commercial garages that deal with many different types of car, and need to be able to offer a complete service to clients.

Choosing the right automotive AC machines for your needs can be a daunting task, and too many people simply opt for the cheapest model available, rather than making an informed decision about the best product for their needs. EPA requirements aside, the most important factor when choosing the correct automotive AC machine for your business, is the capacity of the machine to deal with the range of vehicles that you currently work on. You need to choose a machine that can connect easily with all the different types of car that your workshop deals with, and which has enough capacity to recover and treat the refrigerant left in the system to remove any impurities.

Basic automotive AC machines such as the Pro Set Oiless Portable Recovery Recycle Unit are flexible enough to reprocess coolant from a fairly wide range of sources, remove any contaminating oils and other liquids, and release the Freon in perfect condition for reuse.

There are other machines in a similar price bracket that are reliable enough for every day use, and yet still compact enough not to require a vast amount of space in your workshop. Automotive AC Machines such as the Inficon Vortex refrigerant recovery machine are ideally suited to occasional use, and are very compact.

If offering AC repairs and servicing is key to your business, then having the right tools for the job is essential. Getting it right at the beginning when you choose an AC coolant recovery machine often means choosing a model from the Cool Tech range. These robust and highly regarded specialist tools are at the centre of any serious AC shop, and thanks to their efficiency and great value for money, will pay for themselves over and over again.

Back Up Auto Sensor

The best solution for protecting your car when reversing is to install a back up auto sensor. By adding an infra red sensor to your rear bumper, you will be able to keep track of anything that is behind your car. By knowing what is hidden behind your car when you are going backwards, you will be able to avoid any accidental bumps that will cause damage to your vehicle.

It is almost impossible to see the details of everything behind your car when you are reversing. Thanks to the limited field of view provided by your mirror, and the shape of the rear of your car, seeing small or low objects such as the front of other cars, docks, and even small children can be extremely difficult.

If you cannot see objects, or are unaware of what is behind your car, you run the risk of bumping into it and either causing damage to your vehicle, or injury to any person who is behind you. This is where a back up auto sensor comes into play. These sensors act as your eyes, and work to detect any objects behind your car, and provide you with a warning before you hit them to prevent damage or injury.

Typically, a back up auto sensor takes the form of row of sensors across the rear bumper of your car connected to a warning device inside the car to let you know when you get too close to an object.

When reversing in a car, it is all too easy to be unaware of any small objects behind the car. If you have children, you will no doubt have had at least one scare when the kids have run out from behind the car when you are reversing. Just imagine if you had not been lucky. By having a back up auto sensor fixed to the rear of your car, you will give yourself peace of mind that you are not putting the lives of loved ones at risk.

Most sensors use an ultrasonic field that echoes off any objects in the way of your vehicle as you reverse, and then provide audible feedback to warn you as you close in on the object that is in your way. Basic back up auto sensors simply combine an alarm with the sensors to warn you, but more advanced models also include a visible display to give you an indication of how close you are getting to any static objects.

Fitting a back up auto sensor to your car can be a very straightforward process. All you need to do is fix the sensors to the rear of your car, and then connect it to the power supply and the internal warning device, whether this is an alarm, or a display screen.

In the past, many people have been put off purchasing a parking sensor for the rear of their car, because they thing that having the sensor devices on their bumper spoils the lines of their car, and is a little unsightly, but this is no longer the case.

To address these concerns, many manufacturers have now started to offer more discreet back up auto sensors which are concealed around the license plates at the back of the car. These are just as effective as the other models, but are less obvious on the back of your car.

You can choose from back up auto sensors that offer a simple audible alarm that beeps at an increasing rate as you close in on objects, through to much more advanced models that include a screen to display the exact distance to objects to make it completely clear to you just how close to something you are getting.

The latest versions can be integrated into the car more completely than ever, and include the possibility of having an LCD display as part of your existing rear view mirror that shows you the distance in either feet or metres.

If you want to make it simpler to park, reduce the risk of bumping into static objects when you are reversing, or protect other people when you are going backwards, fitting a back up auto sensor to the rear of your car will offer you the kind of warning that you need. The expense of bumping into someone else's car can be quite high, and for a fraction of that cost, you can protect your self and keep your vehicle looking great.

Car Security Alarms

Would you ever consider leaving thousands of dollars worth of your personal belongings in the street without protection? Well, that is what you do every time you park your car at the side of the road or anywhere else if you do not have a car security alarm fitted to it. Most cars do not come with an effective protection system, and a determined thief is generally able to steal a car in a matter of seconds with nothing to stop them doing so.

Car security alarms come in a variety of forms, and offer different levels of protection for your property depending on the specific model that you choose. From basic systems that simply provide a siren if the car is broken into, through to comprehensive car security systems that include every possible protection including engine immobilisers, electronic door locks, and much more to make it very difficult for a thief to get away with your car.

The ease with which you can actually fit a car security alarm will depend on the complexity of the system that you have chosen to install. The most basic systems can be fitted very quickly by almost anyone, but if you have chosen to get a fully comprehensive car security alarm system that includes a wide range of features, then you will definitely need a professional to carry out the installation on your behalf.

A basic system such as the Commando 357 Car Alarm is designed to be easy for almost anyone to install. It features a 6 tone 125dB siren that is backed up by a light actuator, and can be easily activated and deactivated by using the wireless remote control. You will be able to set the controls of the alarm to ensure that it goes off when you want it to. From the lightest of touch from a passer-by through to the point at which entry is attempted, the sensors can be set up to offer excellent control.

The next level car security alarm from Commando is the 520s. This builds upon the features of the entry level system with a number of additional features including the ability to disable the starter motor of the car and effectively immobilise it. The 520 car security alarm also includes the installation of a keyless entry system for your car, which means that instead of having to fumble or your key on a cold morning, you will be able to unlock the doors at the push of a button.

Further upgrades to the basic Commando system include the 550s alarm system. This takes protection to the next level, and includes a complete engine kill system that prevents any getaway from taking place.

There are a number of additional accessories available for your car alarm system, including a personal monitor. This pocket sized device works in the same way as a regular pager in order to give you warning if someone is trying to gain entry to your car so that you can take appropriate action. With this system, you can set the alarm to not make a sound when someone is braking into your car so that they are not warned that the police are on their way.

Car security alarms can be tailored completely to your particular needs. You can protect every aspect of your car to prevent anyone from being able to gain entry to the vehicle, and taking it without your permission. Security systems can be tailor made to include everything from keyless entry to electrically controlled windows. You can prevent the engine starting, and even carry a pager that will warn you if your vehicle is in danger.

The most import aspect of choosing an alarm system for your car is to pick one that includes all the features that you feel you will need. You should remember the value of your vehicle, and choose a car security alarm that will offer appropriate protection.

Your Hybrid Car Engine

The hybrid car engine holds the key to its being an environment-friendly vehicle. They are a combination of a gas engine and an electric motor that assists a car as it accelerates, slows down and even when it stops. Throughout all these basic actions, the hybrid car engine plays a major role so that the least amount of gas is used and cleaner emissions achieved.

Breaking It Down

A gas-electric hybrid vehicle is exactly that; a car that runs on both gas and electricity. A gas-powered car has a fuel tank and it is this tank that supplies the engine with the gasoline it needs to run. The engine then turns a transmission which is what it essentially behind the turning of wheels.

A set of batteries provide the power to the motor in an electric car. In this case, it is the electric motor that turns the transmission that turns the wheels. Although mileage is something that gas-powered cars have been covering with great efficiency in later years, there is still the issue of air pollution, which is something a hybrid car is a solution to.

The hybrid's motor doesn't produce any pollution at all. But an electric car can only go so far before having to be charged again. Now, by combining these two functions into one, a hybrid car engine attempts to increase mileage while reducing emissions of a gas-powered car and also reducing the use of large amounts of fuel. And to make up for the electric motor having to be charged, it is now left to the gas-powered engine and transmission to charge the cells in the batteries found in a hybrid electric vehicle. It's a simple solution that has had great and positive effects with respect to fuel economy and eco-friendliness.

Cutting Costs

The hybrid car engine is known to help keep carbon dioxide emissions down and therefore it helps to improve our environmental situation by keeping pollution levels at bay and much lower. But most importantly (to average consumers), they can save you money gas and maintenance costs. The engines of these cars are quite small and easy to manage so they last for a very long time and are quite durable.

When choosing your options, consider the manufacturers that offer free part replacements on the model that you're getting. There is also the added tax break that the US government has promised to all owners of new hybrid vehicles purchased after January 1 2006.

Its environment-friendly as well as its being economical make the hybrid technology popular among both manufacturers and consumers. It is perhaps one of the most overlooked technologies in the world but a growing awareness of these vehicles will eventually lead to a future of more hybrid electric vehicles on city streets and highways.

Easily Create a Custom Auto With a Car Decal Kit

Ever since the first cars rolled off the assembly line, there have been car decal kits of some sort. Back then, in the latter half of the nineteenth century, a decal would be something as simple as a personalized paint job. After all, Henry Ford's famous saying was: "You can get your car in any color you want, just so long as it is black". So, people soon started looking for ways to make their car as personal as they could.

In our modern high-tech world, you can get a good one at many local stores (Target, Wal-Mart etc.), or you can just go online and do a search for some. Any decent search engine like Google will do it. Just go to one and type in "car decal kit" and you will get a long list of sites to choose from.

After that, you have a fun decision to make: what kind of decaling are you looking to put on your car?

There are some kits that are fairly standard. Things like "Wings of Fire" and "Tribal Fire" for the hood; and stars, flames or a dragon for the side. Some are very specific, so you need to be sure you get the right one for what you want to do. There are also ones for adding something to the hood of your car, and then there are those for sprucing up the sides of your car.

The next thing to consider when looking is they type of material. Now, of course, there is always the issue of color, but that is simple enough to select. The real item of importance is whether you want to use paint or vinyl, as they are the two primary types of car decals.

With some of the newer ones, they use magnetic decals. This makes applying and removing them much easier, and it also means you do not have to worry about making a mess when putting the decals on. We're not all artists and we don't all have a steady hand; none of that matters as you can reposition and change the magnetic ones to your heart's content.

Then, there is the other added feature of reflectivity. With some car decal kits, the material is reflective, which can be a real help in keeping your car safe. After all, these days, what with cars costing so much, you want to do all you can to prevent someone from hitting it. So, a nice decal with some reflective paint can actually be a wise investment. And, given the wide variety of images and patterns that are out there, you can easily find something that you will like.

Create your own car decal kit quickly and easily with magnetic and vinyl decals, available at http://www.HumperBumper.com. Many designs to chose from, or you can get custom decals, all at wholesale prices.

The Concept Behind Electric Diesel Hybrid Cars

It seems that everywhere you turn, more more people are becoming involved in the "Green" movement. People are becoming more environmentally conscience and as a result they try to do their part in keeping the environment clean. As most people know, the earth's resources are somewhat limited and have become a global concern. It appears that more and more people are economizing because they realize that wasteful purchases can lead to problems with our world, as well as one's finances.

With Electric Diesel Hybrid Cars, these two concerns could be dealt with easily.

Two alternative types of power, each working together in unison, power the electric diesel hybrid cars. They offer the benefits of both classes of powered vehicles, eliminating the hassle of charge distance issues and reducing the carbon monoxide emission values into the atmosphere, as well as reducing the need for gas.

These hybrid cars operate on a simple principle of self-sustaining cars, with a little boost from the regular combustible engine. They are configured to work with two "power source" components, which hand in hand, gives their user the option of economizing on their gas consumption, as well as keep as environment cleaner.

One big advantage that the electric diesel hybrid cars have over the dedicated electric cars is that they don't have the charge distance range limitation which most of electric cars are bound to. These cars still do have an on board rechargeable battery or fuel cell system, but they don't have to be recharged on a dedicated level, as these electrical diesel hybrid cars would charge while "rolling on gas mode". The electric generators are connected to work with the vehicle's standard combustible engine which allows it to respectively charge there on board rechargeable battery while on the road, rolling and cruising to their destinations.

If a person decides to set the car on "gas mode", the vehicle could easily work as a regular gas engine car, as they charge the batteries. If they set the car on "electric mode", then the car becomes a very environmentally friendly vehicle and will run as though it was on the "gas mode" setting.

One good example of how electric diesel hybrid cars run is to compare it to an automatic watch. As long as there is motion, these watches will power themselves up, recharging their internal rechargeable power source systems. Seeing how the average car driver cannot push around their vehicle, the "gas mode" setting on these vehicles stand to boost up the charging process and as a result, the consumption of gas purchases are reduced to a bare minimum, thus helping them economizing gas usage.

As the next generation of automobiles, electric diesel hybrid cars are sure to come in as the new de facto way vehicles are going to be powered.

Robinair AC Machines

SPX Robinair is one of the leading manufacturers of refrigerant recycling machines in the market today. Robinair AC machines are becoming more and more common in modern auto shops that service and repair air conditioning systems. Since 1992, the EPA has prohibited the release of refrigerant into the atmosphere and Robinair is one of the first companies to step in and begin producing quality refrigerant recovery machines for the automotive service industry. These have come along way from just recovering refrigerant from automotive air conditioning systems. Robinair has designed and built units that exchange antifreeze, are recyclers, and the Vehicle Service Solutions line of equipment.

There are many reasons to purchase Robinair AC machines over other brands for your air conditioning service needs. Robinair is constantly updating and introducing the latest technologies and advancements to their line of them. New products are tested on a regular basis and new technologies are in constant development. This means you will be using the latest advancements in your Robinair AC machine. Robinair even has an environmental chamber to simulate real world conditions that might affect your refrigerant recovery machine.

These are made in America. Which means they are a very accessible company with service and warranty centers all over the United States. If you need some warranty or service work done on your Robinair AC machine, chances are there is a service center close to you. To find simply go to their convenient service locator so you can quickly locate the nearest facility.

One of the most popular Robinair AC machines is the CoolTech 34700Z. This unit has all of the latest technological developments that the industry has to offer. The Robinair 34700 does it all. It recovers, recycles, evacuates, leak tests and recharges R134 air conditioning systems. Robinair makes refrigerant recovery a snap with the 34700Z. This unit is fully automatic. Which means for most functions, you can walk away from the AC machine while it does its thing. For example, the recovery function is fully automatic. First you connect the high and low side hoses to the air conditioning system. Now open the coupler valves on the hoses and press "Recover" on the AC machine. The Robinair 34700 will begin to remove the refrigerant from the ac system. When the system has recovered to a vacuum of 13 in HG the compressor will automatically shut off. Once that is done, the recovery process is complete and you can begin working on the air condition system. It couldn't be easier! You don't have to baby sit the unit, it will shut off on its own when the correct vacuum is reached.

Another great automatic feature is the automatic refrigerant refill. The CoolTech 34700Z is designed so the unit maintains 12 to 15 pounds of refrigerant stored internally in the AC machine. The unit will let you know when you need to replace the supply tank. Again no babysitting is required and you will not have to stop working in the middle of your project and change tanks! The automated features don't stop there either. The 34700Z is equipped with automatic oil drain. During the recovery process the air conditioning system oil is collected and drained into a bottle built into the unit. Robinair AC machines are also great for recharging your air conditioning system. They have built in charging scales and have 6 cfm vacuum pump built into the unit. The 6 cfm vacuum pump is more than enough anything from a small to an RV.

The Robinair AC machine and CoolTech series of refrigerant recovery machines is highly recommended by Red Hill Supply. Using Robinair products means you are using quality American made products that have the most up to date standards. Also, servicing and warranty is much easier and convenient with service centers throughout the United States.

Winter Driving Hazards and Cautions

It's that time of year again, when temperatures drop and ice and snow become the norm. Here are some of the most common winter driving hazards and cautions with tips on how to avoid or prepare for them.

Be Prepared

Before winter is in full swing, it's important to take steps to insure that your vehicle is properly prepared. This includes checking your battery, windshield wipers, tires, coolant, windshield wiper fluid, spare tire, heater, defroster, any element that you were experiencing problems with and checking for any leaks. If your vehicle is in need of a tuneup or oil change, get these things done before winter hits. If you live in a region that gets alot of rain or snow, then consider getting special tires for these conditions. Also keep a set of tire chains with you at all times.

Getting Stuck

Should you get stuck somewhere due to being stuck in snow or some roads that you need to travel on are closed, you should have some essential emergency supplies with you. These include blankets, several day supply of food, several gallons of water, rope, flashlight, first aid kit, extra clothing, shovel, cat litter for traction if tires are stuck, scraper, jumper cables and a wheel wrench and wheel jack.

Keeping Warm

One excellent tip for keeping warm if stuck in your vehicle for a long period of time is to carry a candle and some matches or a lighter. Lighting a candle in the middle of your car can keep your entire vehicle warm while it is lit. So have some long lasting candles in your car and you won't be cold if you get stuck.

Black Ice

Black ice is one of the worst hazards you can come upon when driving. You usually can't tell you are on it until you start sliding. Worse yet, if you hit your brakes, it can cause you to slide even more or even overturn. The best defense for black ice is simply to go slow in areas where you know the ground is frozen and it's been raining or snowing. In addition, you can use caution when applying your brakes if you start to slide. Pump your brakes slowly if you find yourself starting to slide. Also, if you start sliding in one area, it's likely there are more areas of the road ahead that have ice on them, so stay alert and keep driving slow and cautiously.

Unexpected Weather

The best protection from unexpected weather is to keep your radio on and stay tuned to a news and weather station. They will let you know of any hazards, whether to watch out for ice, snow, rain or fog and whether any roads are closed or require chains. You'll also want to keep a weather band or emergency radio in your trunk at all times with fresh batteries and extra batteries.

Handy Gadgets

The right technology can save your life. Consider getting a GPS for your vehicle, or a portable GPS. A GPS can stop you from getting lost and if you get stuck somewhere unfamiliar, it will show you how to get out and find help. A cell phone is something just about everyone has in their vehicle anyway. But consider keeping either a hand crank battery generator or a battery powered cell phone generator in your vehicle. Some flashlights and emergency radios come with a hand crank on the side, which you can hook up to your cell phone and give yourself virtually unlimited cell phone power, which can be a lifesaver in itself.

Winter Driving Tips

Winter road conditions can become hazardous with very little warning. Follow these precautions to help make sure you and your family arrive safe every time you set out on the road.

Let the road conditions dictate your speed. Remember that speed limit signs only present guidelines for dry surfaces when visibility is ideal. When the road has water, ice, or snow on it, or when snow is blowing and making it hard to see, you should slow down until you can be certain to retain control of your vehicle at all times. In the winter, this will be much slower than the posted speed limit.

Leave more room between vehicles. Winter roads require much greater stopping distances, and just because you can stop, you can't be sure the other drivers will be able to. Make sure there is enough space between your vehicle and the others on the road to allow you to stop when traffic or road conditions change unexpectedly.

Change lanes or directions slowly. When you change the position of your car to the left or right, or make a turn, it requires extra friction to stay on the road. When the roads are wet, icy, or snowy, make gradual changes and signal to other drivers well in advance.

Do you know when to pump the brakes or not? If you have anti-lock brakes, DO NOT pump the brakes when stopping. Pumping the brakes IS recommended for vehicles without anti-lock brakes.

Use extra caution on bridges and overpasses. When the cold winter winds blow, bridges and overpasses develop ice more quickly than other road surfaces. Make sure to carefully assess the conditions of bridges and remain attentive of the road surface.

Keep an eye out for deer. During the winter months, deer congregate together in large groups. If one is near the edge of the road, or crosses in front of you, more are certain to be close by. In rural areas, they are especially active during hunting season. Do NOT assume that a deer will get out of the way of your car. Slow down, flash your lights, and wait to proceed until the deer is out of range.

Show your holiday spirit. Frustration can cause tragic consequences with unsafe driving. Keep your cool, take a deep breath, and remember that everyone needs to get back home safely.

Don't let your holiday be cut short by an auto accident. Stay awake, aware, and in control of your car.

Modern Technology - Great For A Car Breakdown!

The wonders of modern technology; love it or hate it, I suspect that most of us find it useful at times! Take the mobile phone, for instance, it's not so many years ago they were almost the size of a house-brick and were seen as a 'yuppie' status symbol. Not any longer. Most of the adult population now have a mobile phone and why not? They are so convenient.

And in the case of a vehicle breakdown situation, it's so easy to call for roadside assistance. Prior to mobile phones, it would have meant a few mile walk if the breakdown occurred in the countryside. Who would want to do that nowadays?

However, it doesn't pay to get complacent; it's still possible to find yourself on a country road between major towns or villages. While you might be aware of which area you're in, could you explain to someone over the telephone exactly where to find you, if you had a vehicle breakdown and needed roadside assistance.

Would you know the name or number of the road you were on? Possibly not if you'd taken a 'B' road or any other minor road. Of course, this may not be so bad if it happened during daylight but what if it was dark? Now it could be your worst nightmare and anytime after 5pm through the winter in the UK can see you in this awful situation.

Well this is where technology comes to the rescue. That little mobile phone which you use to call RAC rescue enables satellite technology to start locating your position to within a metre as soon as you call. You don't need to know where you are - just be pleased you are an RAC member.

Every rescue patrol vehicle has Global Satellite System on board which is used to pinpoint your position from your mobile phone signal. Using this system in conjunction with the latest mapping software allows the nearest available patrol to find the most efficient route to you.

This means that the rescue patrol can get to you more quickly and save on fuel as well, so in these circumstances I imagine a yes vote for modern technology is well in order!

Thank goodness for RAC rescue.

HHO Gas Car Modification

HHO gas based car system's are the latest breakthrough in terms of an environmentally friendly car modification which allows users to increase their mileage, save money on gasoline costs and drastically reduce car emissions. Such system's rely on HHO gas to assist combustion. These systems are surely going to revolutionise the way we look at fuel consumption and economy of cars.

We live in a fast paced world where rising gasoline prices are a major issue for consumers worldwide. The majority of US, Canadian, British and Australian citizens are heavily reliant on their car's and hence gasoline prices. Imagine becoming immune to rising gasoline prices and laughing in the faces of oil companies worldwide? Such HHO based technology can save the average US driver in excess of $1000 dollars a year in gasoline prices.

Using an HHO gas based car modification can increase mileage between 30% - 50%. The efficiency of your car's engine will be dramatically increased, which will make amazing increases of your mileage. Further to this your engine will run smoother and quieter. Not only will such technology increase mileage, but it will also improve performance and power of your car, and assist to prolong engine life.

How It Works

Now we are going to demonstrate how a HHO based gas system works. The technology does not interfere or damage your car's engine or computer system. Essentially you place a quart size container filled with distilled water and small amount of baking soda under the hood of your car. The system is powered by electricity (12 Volts) from the engine, creates a vacuum and produces HHO Gas. This gas is then pushed into the engines manifold or carburettor.

Conclusion

Using a water car system is not certainly part of the solution to rising gasoline prices. 100% water car's are something for the future, but currently a long way off being released to the public. Sure you can buy a hybrid car if you have the money, but it is not a viable option for your average Joe. Imagine being able to save money today, increase your car's mileage and help save our environment with the one basic system.

Want to learn more about the revolutionary water4gas system and how you can increase you mileage and save thousands of dollars a year? Please Visit:

How to Get Tax Breaks for Your Car Donation

great way to support your favorite charity is through donating a used vehicle. The charity will most definitely thank you, and the government will, too. Your generosity will likely be recognized with a special tax deduction, but certain requirements must be met before you can receive this type of tax break.

Unfortunately, the policies regarding vehicle donations are not as clear-cut as those for other types of charitable contributions. The level of tax relief you can receive depends not only on the total claimed value of your donation, but also on how the charity will use the vehicle. That's why there may be a delay, and you may not know your full tax deduction amount at the time that you make the donation.

Changes were made since 2005 to the statutes for tax deductions applied to vehicles donated to charitable trusts. If the declared value of the donated vehicle exceeds $500, and the vehicle is placed for sale by the charitable trust, taxpayers are limited to claiming the gross profits from the transaction.

If this type of charitable donation appeals to you, you'll need to keep the following points in mind:

Claim Fair Market Value

When filing your tax return, be sure to deduct the fair market value of the vehicle. This amount will take into consideration the condition of the donated vehicle. Claiming the full value of the car is not acceptable.

Itemized Deductions List

You must itemize your deductions in order to take full advantage of tax relief available to you. If you are claiming standard education, you will not benefit from this clause.

Charity Eligibility

In order for you to receive the benefit, the charitable trust must qualify with the tax department. Check a copy of Publication 78, available online and at public libraries, for a list of eligible charities.

Estimating Vehicle's Fair Market Value

There are various factors to consider when determining the value of your car. Refer to a recent used car guide for precise instructions to evaluate your vehicle's value. You may need to make adjustments depending on accessories, mileage and other indicators of its general condition.

Filing Your Charitable Contribution Deduction

Be sure to keep good records when claiming a tax deduction for your vehicle donation. Store all receipts and forms relating to the car donation, and a copy of its fair market value, in a secure place. And keep it for several years.

If you are a taxpayer in the USA and you've donated a vehicle to charity, contact the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 to find out if your previous contribution is tax deductible. If you think that someone sought your contribution for deceitful purposes, speak with an appropriate state charity watchdog at the state Attorney General's office.

Donating a spare or unneeded vehicle is a very generous way to benefit your favorite registered charity. The charitable organization will thank you, and eventually so will the tax officer.

A Women's Guide To Car At Auction

Auctions can be an intimidating place to buy a car. However having recently experienced buying at one, I decided to write this guide to encourage more women to consider this as an alternative.

My son wanted to buy a van for his business, however most of the vans available locally in his price range, were either battle scarred or had high mileage. So he decided to try an auction. As my husband (the motoring expert in our house) was unable to attend, I stepped into the breach. It was a very interesting experience with lessons learnt very quickly, however following a few rules we did ended up with a smart looking van with low mileage for the less money than would have been needed to buy from a dealer.

Preparation is key to buying at Auction

1. Use the internet to find your local Auctions and look at the list of vehicles for sale. Check that there are several of the type that you are interested in. No point going otherwise.

2. Check the rules of the Auction.

- How can you pay?

- Is there a deposit to pay before bidding?

- What are the additional costs to pay on top of the bid price

- Tax and Insurance

3. Before driving the car away, you need insure it and then tax it. While you can get immediate insurance online or over the phone, there will be a delay before you can be tax it, as you either need a cover note for the Post Office or the insurance company to update the national database to be able to tax online or by phone. Some insurance companies can provide a cover note by email. It is worth checking with your insurance company before going to the auction.

4. How you are going to take the car away? You can either pay for delivery to your home or wait until your tax and insurance are sorted out and then drive it away. Check the costs involved for both options as the Auctioneers will charge for storage of your car beyond a set time.

5. Decide on the make and model, mileage range and condition for the types of vehicle you are interested in. Check the price ranges for each selection using the internet. Decide how much you are willing to bid, given the additional costs buying at Auction will involve. Put all these details together in a spreadsheet and print it out to take with you.

At the Auction

6. Arrive early before the bidding starts, so you can pay your deposit (if required), get your bidders number and a guide to the vehicles for sale.

7. The cars will all be parked up, in numerical order, take a quick sweep through to identify all those that you are interested in and return to look at these in detail. For each car you like, mark a price on the catalogue that you are willing to go to.

8. Before your first choice comes up, go and watch the bidding, to get a feel for what is happening, so you will comfortable when you bid.

Checking the Car

If possible bring someone with you who can help check the cars over, a quick check list for the non technical is given below. Remember at Auction you cannot test drive the car, but the cars will be driven through the arena. Below are some ideas of what to look for.

9. Check for battle damage. Sometimes this is obvious, a scrape or a dent but it is not so easy to spot re-sprays after accidents. Look at the colors of the individual panels, are they all the same? Is the inside of the door the same color as the outside? Do all the panels line up?

10. Look at the engine. Is there oil everywhere? Then give it a miss. On the flip side an engine that looks as if it has been steam cleaned is suspicious. Go for an engine that looks used but has no oil.

11. Check the tread on the tires. I saw that many of the tires were painted black to make them look newer than they actually were.

12. Be at the car when it is started up for the drive into the bidding area. It should start first time and run well.

Car Auction Fees

Every car auction has charges on top of the purchase price of a vehicle sold at auction. Let's take a closer look.

INDEMNITY FEES

Indemnity fees are charges on every car that is sold at auction. Probably better known as a 'buyers premium'. Not all fees are the same and can differ greatly depending on what type of car auction you attend.

If you go to one of the bigger companies, these particular auctions have their own purpose built auction centres, a huge amount of staff to run them, and also a massive amount of overheads as well.

You and me as a buyer have some of these costs passed onto us in the form of indemnity fees, i know it doesn't seem fair but that how the auctions work and make their profits.

So does that make the bigger auction companies the wrong place to buy a car? No, not at all. The higher indemnity fees are a down side but the plus side is that there is a huge amount of choice at these larger auctions and you can drive out with a great bargain no doubt about that.

What i have found in my experience is at the more smaller independent auction companies the situation is again twofold. The plus side is the indemnity fees are a bit less but the down side is that the choice is a bit less when choosing this type of auction.

You can find these smaller auctions if you look in your local yellow pages and most of the companies advertised will be independent ones. The best thing to do is call the auction centre before attending to find out what their charges are and then you won't get any surprises after buying a car.
